RI International Film Festival Short Film Screening

There are literally thousands of film festivals worldwide but only 6 of them have a rather unique accolade; they are nominating Festivals for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, BAFTA, and The Canadian Screen Awards. The Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) is one of these Festivals and the only Festival in New England with this distinction.

Every year, the RIIFF kicks off its annual August Festival with an opening night program that salutes the art of the short film. Every year since 2002, several of these films have ended up receiving Oscar® nominations. RIIFF has seen 46 films nominated that premiered at the Festival and to date, there have been nine Academy wins. This year, there are nine films that screened at RIIFF in 2016 that are on the Academy short list for Oscar®  nominations.

On Thursday night, January 19th, 7:00 p.m. we’ll share with you some of this year’s short-listed films before the Academy makes its official nomination announcement (Tuesday, January 24, 2017).

Plus, we’ll showcase a few short films made right in our community by Rhode Island students…

This will be a great evening to truly discover the new voices of independent film and one not to miss
